Clifford Lee Hummer

Clifford Lee Hummer, a kind and generous man, greatly loved by his family and all who knew him, went to be with his Heavenly Father July 3, 2021
Cliff was born on June 6, 1931 in La Junta, Colorado to Clifford Hummer and Lois (Wilhelm) Hummer.
He grew up in Utleyville, Colorado in a country home that doubled as the Utleyville Post Office where his mother served as postmaster. After the passing of his father when he was two years of age, Lois married Grover M. Dowell who raised Cliff as his own along with Cliff’s six siblings Duane, Eileen, Dean, Myrna Kay, Cloyd, and Charley.
As a teenager, Cliff moved in with his grandparents in Cedaredge, Colorado to attend Cedaredge High School. While there, he also completed his first-year college courses. But then, as the Korean war had begun, he enlisted in the Air Force, eventually becoming a Sergeant, and was honorably discharged after four years of service. He continued his college studies at his church’s two-year Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa going on to earn his bachelor’s degree in arts and sciences from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Cliff’s extensive career included summer employment at Sam Huff Farms in Springfield, Co. cutting broom corn, running a tractor, cultivating pinto beans, and the like. He was later employed as a drill press operator at Worthington Corporation, a steam pump manufacturer in Denver, Co. and then obtained a civil service position at Transcon Exploration. His career in the civil service continued at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Az. The remainder of Cliff’s professional career of twenty-plus years was spent at General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Tx. where he was employed by the federal government as a Price Analyst until his retirement in 1986.
He met his first wife Diana (Dow) while at Graceland College, and they were married June 8, 1956 in Denver, Co. In 1960 and ’62, they were blessed with sons Mark and David. Cliff and Diana were strong Christians and served in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in many capacities throughout their thirty years of marriage until her passing in 1986.
In 1988, he married Sally Jane (Groom) who brought with her another two grown sons into the family, Steven and Kevin. Cliff and Sally were happily married thirty-three years.
Cliff was an extremely creative individual, and throughout his lifetime, engaged in a wide variety of pursuits. As a talented musician, he wrote and performed a collection of songs accompanying himself on the guitar, banjo, and harmonica. He was fascinated by rocks and minerals and handcrafted many pieces of jewelry. He was also an avid photographer who collected cameras and enjoyed participating in the photography club at General Dynamics and served as its president for a time. Other interests included leatherworking, carpentry, landscaping his yards, and building model airplanes. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, or just camping with his family.
He spent his 90th, and final birthday with his family, including his beloved grandchildren, Mallory, Tori, Seth, and Preston hunting fossils, one of his favorite pastimes.
As an Elder, Cliff remained a strong presence in his church, now known as “Community of Christ,” including serving as the pastor of several congregations. Cliff served as a great role model to all who knew him.
