I’m John Calvin Prevo, 88, of Granbury, Texas, passed away on March 17, 2026, in Decatur, Texas.
John was born on May 15, 1937, in Big Spring, Texas, to Martin Prevo and Mary Pryor Prevo. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1956 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1961.
On October 9, 1963, John married the love of his life, Mary Scarlett Prevo. Together they shared 63 wonderful years of marriage filled with family, adventure, and faith.
John had a remarkable career that began in missile defense, working with Rocketdyne and General Dynamics. In 1967, he joined Boeing and became part of the NASA Apollo program. John proudly served on the Apollo launch team, working on fuel systems and launch crews through the Apollo 18 mission, helping contribute to one of the most historic achievements in human history — putting men on the moon.
Following his work in aerospace, John continued his engineering career in the nuclear energy industry, working on startup teams until 1998 and later serving on outage and refitment projects until his retirement in 2013.
John lived life with curiosity, passion, and a deep appreciation for adventure. He loved hot rod cars and drag racing, especially Corvettes. His love for speed began in high school when he built a 1950 Chevrolet hot rod and drag raced around West Texas in the 1950s. Over the years he owned several Corvettes, including a 1963 split-window coupe and a 1993 40th Anniversary Edition.
John also loved travel and exploring the world. Throughout his lifetime he visited every U.S. state as well as the Pacific Islands, Central and South America, Japan, Southeast Asia, the United Kingdom, and many parts of Europe.
In addition to cars and travel, John enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid photographer who loved capturing landscapes, animals, and flowers. He was also a collector of vintage Winchester rifles and shotguns.His faith was an important part of his life. John was baptized in 1971 at the Worldwide Church of God and spent the remainder of his life as a devoted servant of the Lord and the church.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Mary Pryor Prevo; his sister, Doris Prevo Vieregge; and his daughter, Elisabeth Prevo Misner.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Scarlett Prevo; his sister, Ruby Bruns; his son, Jon Prevo and spouse Joey Dykes Prevo; and his daughter, Tammy Prevo.
He also leaves behind many beloved grandchildren: Nathan Jennings (Emily Williamson Jennings), Erica Prevo Morgan (Nick Morgan), Nena Prevo Dukes (Allen Dukes), Ashley Misner Saylor (Drew Saylor), Trey Misner Tempest (Aria Tempest), and Dorian Prin.John was blessed with great-grandchildren: Madison Meyer, Raiden Morgan, Ethan Saylor, and Kai Tempest.
John will be remembered for his brilliant mind, adventurous spirit, love of family, and the stories he shared about fast cars, world travels, and the historic moments he helped make possible.
A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 4.
