Larry Sligar November 17, 1945 – March 7, 2022
Larry Sligar, 76, passed away on Monday March 7, 2022, surrounded by family. Larry was born on November 17, 1945, in, Kansas City, Missouri to Elwood and Roma (Montgomery) Sligar. He graduated from Argentine High School in 1963. He then followed in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps by embarking on a career at Santa Fe Railroad. He started as a machinist apprentice in Kansas City, and later moved to San Bernardino, California. His next stop was in Topeka, Kansas and he eventually advanced to a position within BNSF Headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. He later became Shop Superintendent at BNSF’s Argentine, Kansas location. Larry was a natural leader that people wanted to follow. He was proud to be a third-generation railroader, retiring after many years of service. After retirement, Larry started Sligar Mechanical Services, providing sales and consulting services to various railroad related companies.
He married his high school sweetheart, Donna June, in 1965. They celebrated 56 years of marriage last June. They had three children and seven grandchildren. He loved working on cars, boats, and his lawn. He enjoyed going on cruises with his friends, family camping trips, grilling, fishing, and was passionate about golf. He loved dogs, and throughout the years several rescue animals found a loving home with Larry and his family. Most of all, he enjoyed doting on his grandchildren and supporting them in their many activities, including band concerts, and sporting events.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Elwood and Roma Sligar, brother Darrell Sligar, sisters-in-law Karen Sligar and Sharon Sligar, and niece Lori Swearingen.
Survivors: Wife, Donna Sligar; son Jim Sligar; son Steven Sligar and wife Jennifer; daughter Kerry DeLorenzo and husband Robert; brothers Dale Sligar, John Sligar and wife Yvonne, and Rex Sligar and wife Andi; Grandchildren, Nicolas Krause and wife Vivian, Ali Sligar, Ashley Sligar, Matthew DeLorenzo, Kailey DeLorenzo, Ethan Davis, and Liam Sligar; and a large extended family and many friends.
Larry was a Christian. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
