Sandy was born Thursday, May 5, 1960, in Shelby, North Carolina to parents, Geraldean (Geri) and Russell Wade Boring. She grew up in Houston, TX and later attended Junior and Senior High School in Big Sandy, Texas (where she was known as Sandy Lilley). Sandy was a “people person” and devoted to friends in Big Sandy, in Houston, as well as later in California.
She attended Sam Houston State University where she met and married Michael Kent Handy in 1978 at the University Heights Baptist Church in Huntsville, Texas over 40 years ago. They moved to Houston, Texas where Mike worked at M.D. Anderson Hospital as a Dosimetrist.
Sandy loved being a mother and adored her four children, Matthew, David, Adam and Jessica. Her first child, Matthew was born with cerebral palsy. She spent most of her time caring for Matthew’s special needs and he preceded his mother in death, at the age of six. Matthew passed away the day after Christmas of 1989. Adam was born in October of 1989 and later Jessica in February 1992
She learned to decorate beautiful cakes for special occasions and made a lovely doll cake for her cousin, Diana’s 12th birthday. For Diana’s marriage, she baked a chocolate groom’s cake with the A&M insignia for the couples’ alma mater.
Sandy’s husband’s work took them to multiple states, including Tallahasse, FL, Boston, MA, Dallas ,Tx, and Fresno, and Modesto Ca. After her children were older, Sandy returned to college and got an AA degree from Fresno City College. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Education followed by a master’s degree from Univ. of Ca, Fresno in Rehabilitation Counseling. She graduated with honors from every degree program and worked at the Department of Rehabilitation, Blind Field Services in Stockton, California between 2007-2012.
After the Handy family moved to South Carolina, Sandy worked as a Mobile Advocate for Worker’s Comp cases and later as a Counselor for the Department of Rehabilitation in Columbia, South Carolina, between 2012-2014. She found great satisfaction helping people receive the rehabilitation they needed to thrive. The Handy’s most recent place of residence is Fort Worth, TX, where Sandy battled numerous health complications that limited her mobility, lung health, and ability to eat enough to maintain her health.
